Concept

Yosegumi Glass is used to express the beauty of each season on the theme of waka poetry.

Yosegumi Glass is a technique, which is developed by our studio, for expressing colors in glass. By arranging thin layers of colored glass, you can see three-dimensional color layers inside the transparent glass.

Waka is a type of poetry in classical Japanese literature. It consists of five phrases of 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic units. It has vast ranges of topics like the beauty of seasons, love, journey, congratulatory form etc. Japan has a vast number of waka poems from ancient times to the present by a great number of people, starting with the Manyoshu. At our studio, we select appropriate waka poems from our predecessors, interpret them in our own way, and make them into designs for our works.

Traditional Japanese Color Scheme

In our studio, we refer to traditional Japanese color schemes, including the Kasane color scheme, a general term for the color scheme of kimonos mainly used by court nobles in the Heian period(A.D.794 〜 1192). Since there are many more colors to choose from today than there were in the Heian period, the final color scheme is determined by comprehensively considering the interpretation of waka poetry and the shape of the vessels etc.
